The Forgotten Walls of Atlàntida
28 August, Festa Major Manresa 2025
In the heart of Manresa, hidden among the familiar city noise and shop windows, there is a door to the past. A gray building, an unremarkable entrance — and only the line of people waiting to enter reveals that something special is happening here. During Festa Major, the doors of the old Atlàntida cinema open once again, not for screenings, but for memories.
The tour begins in the courtyard of the Kursaal theatre. People of all ages gather to reconnect with a piece of Manresa’s past.
The guide tells the story of the city, weaving together past and present. As you listen, you begin to feel how deeply Manresa has changed, and how important it is to preserve these fragments of memory.
On the columns, the guide shows old photographs: the Passeig de Pere III in black and white. Looking at them, you cannot help but be transported to those times.
Atlàntida is not just a building. For Manresa, it is part of its cultural memory: families came here, premieres took place, dates and first kisses happened here. When the cinema closed in 2012, the city lost a piece of its soul.
Inside, everything breathes with time. Narrow corridors, peeling walls, the smell of dust and iron — everything seems to invite you behind the scenes of the past.
A special stop is the hall. The rows of seats are empty, the screen has long gone dark, yet the air still carries the echo of hundreds of voices. The guide tells how the hall used to be full, how life thrived here, and how one day it all came to an end. To listen to such stories is to take part in a larger conversation about the city and its people.
But the strongest impression comes from the projection room. There, among reels of film and massive projectors, the very magic of cinema comes alive.
The projectionist carefully explains how it all worked, and for a moment it feels as though the past has not completely disappeared.
A giant machine with a golden lens, kilometers of celluloid film, mechanisms that once spun and brought stories to life on the screen.
Atlàntida is where Manresa remembers itself. And to step inside during Festa Major is to touch a past that would otherwise remain behind a closed door.
